You have probably heard the term SEO, but do you really know what it is and does SEO matter? I know a lot of people hear the term, know they should know it, but tend to push it aside into the ‘to’do’ corner because it seems like this huge, complicated thing. I could probably write a really long post about SEO, but I am not going to do that. Instead, I am going to give you the basics and explain it the way I see it and how I have used it sucessfully.
What does SEO stand for?
Lets start right at the begining, what does SEO stand for?
S – Search
E – Engine
O – Optimization
Is that clear? No? I didn’t think so…
Basically SEO is a variety of things you can do to make Google like your website more so that it will show up in search results. At some point the goal was to get your website in that number 1 spot place on the search page, however this is not the only reason you should be doing SEO.
Why Does SEO Matter?
Once upon a time the ultimate goal of SEO what to place high (or number 1) in search results. As the interenet has grown and the amount of people fighting for that same spot in the same area this idea of placing number 1, or sometimes even on the first page, can be somewhat unreasonable to expect. Ideally you want to place somewhere on the first 2 pages if you can. But even if you don’t show up in those first 10 spots, you still benefit from good SEO, and by implementing SEO practices you should see an increase in organic traffic.
One study done by HubSpot even showed that coming up on the first page of Google doesn’t seem to matter as much before, especially if your content or keywords don’t make sense. People are more likely to skip over a higher ranked page if one below it makes more sense.
With MiniBackdrops, I never worried about trying to rank nr 1 on google. I just made sure to implement good SEO practices, and the better ranking my individual pages got, the higher ranking my website in general got, and I eventually ended up with the top spot for the keyword Small Backdrops, which was exactly what I was selling.
In short… you want to make google like your website. If Google doesn’t like your website for whatever reason (poor content, incorrect keywords and meta descriptions, etc) then you are not going to show up ANYWHERE in search. The more you play by googles rules, the better chance you have to start coming up higher in search results and the more organic traffic you will get.
So does SEO matter? Yes, SEO matters!
